French President Francois Hollande has said the European Union cannot be expected to "follow the example" of one country after talks with David Cameron. UN Syria envoy Lakhdar Brahimi has said that progress at the Syria peace talks in Geneva has been slow but forms a basis on which the two sides can build. The absence of Senate President David Mark from Thursday’s Senate plenary, stalled the defection of 11 aggrieved Peoples Democratic Party senators to the All Progressives Congress. President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday appealed to members of the National Assembly to expedite action on the 2014 Appropriation Bill in order to enable his administration to deliver dividends of democracy to the people. Jonathan made the appeal during a stakeholders’ forum of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme held inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja. When the debate on the bill entered the second day in the Senate on Wednesday, some Peoples Democratic Party and All Progressives Congress senators had described the document as anti-people.

The Federal Government on Thursday released the modalities for the nomination of delegates to the proposed national conference. The government, in a statement read to journalists by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, said the conference, which would hold in the Federal Capital Territory ,would last for three months. Present at the media briefing were the Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee on National Dialogue, Senator Femi Okurounmu, and the Secretary, Dr. Akilu Indabawa.

RIVERS State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, on Thursday insisted that the defected governors of the Peoples Democratic Party would not return to the PDP. Amaechi said that their defection to the APC was not basically because of the former PDP Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, but as a result of President Goodluck Jonathan’s refusal to address issues of constitutionalism and accountability. He maintained that the only way to address such issues was through Nigerians and not President Jonathan.

A former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, said on Thursday that the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Atahiru Jega, should resign if he could not guarantee perfect elections in 2015. Gunmen, suspected to be members of the violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram, on Thursday bombed the Giade Divisional Police Headquaters in Giade Local Government Area of Bauchi State. They made away with arms and ammunition after shooting a policeman on the leg. Confirming the incident to newsmen, the Information Officer of the Local Government, Yakubu Gana, said the gunmen numbering about 10, stormed the Divisional Police Headquaters at about 2.20am. He said they shot one of the policemen on duty, broke into the cell and released one person in detention.

Members of the House of Representatives on Thursday rejected a proposal to simplify the process of removing the President and Vice-President from office. The proposal was contained in a bill seeking to amend Section 143 of the 1999 Constitution by deleting it and replacing with an entirely new section 143. The bill, which was sponsored by a lawmaker from Bauchi State, Yakubu Dogara, sought to remove the “ambiguity” in the procedure for impeaching the two highest political office holders with a notice of impeachment initiated by the House of Representatives and terminating in the Senate.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Thursday adduced reasons he refused to run against former President Olusegun Obasanjo in 2003. He said he declined the invitation, which would have made him to contest for the presidential ticket of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, on moral grounds. Atiku, who was responding to a remark from one of the participants in his South-West consultative meeting in Ibadan, Oyo State on Thursday, noted that contrary to the notion that his best chance to have become the president of the country was in 2003-when stakeholders in the PDP offered him the opportunity to contest against Obasanjo – he still found it difficult to accept the offer because doing so would be going against the position the PDP had earlier taken at a caucus meeting to retain the presidency in the South.

The Head of the Science Department at the Niger State Polytechnic, Alhaji Abdulrashid Abdullahi, was on Thursday killed by three gunmen on the Zungeru-Tegina highway. The News Agency of Nigeria learnt in Minna that Abdullahi was killed while on an official trip to Kaduna. The technology could impact on both road safety and civil liberties. The BBC understands it would take several years for any such technical proposal to be drafted.

The US is "concerned" that Syria is behind schedule in handing over its chemical weapons, Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel has said. Mr Hagel told reporters in Poland he did not know the reason for the delay but said Damascus "needs to fix this".
