The Federal Government is to step in to pay the outstanding wages of Super Eagles’ coach Stephen Keshi, the sports minister has announced, promising his salary arrears would be cleared. Bolaji Abdullahi said he had received approval from President Goodluck Jonathan to pick up the tab for Keshi and his assistants, who are owed a total of 78 million naira ($485,000, 357,000 euros).

Rattled by the defection of five out of its seven aggrieved governors to the All Progressives Congress on Wednesday, the National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party has scheduled an emergency meeting for next Monday. The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced the restriction on human and vehicular movements in two local government areas in Anambra during Saturday’s supplementary governorship election. A statement from the Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Prof. Chukwuemeka Onukaogu, in Awka on Friday named the local governments as Idemili North and Onitsha South. It also said the restriction would begin at midnight on Friday and end at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Mr Wale Abe, the Executive Secretary of Financial Markets Dealers Association, says the N5.74 trillion facility given banks by the CBN will help to reduce interest rates in the country. Abe made the observation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Lagos. He also said that availability of liquidity in the financial system would encourage Nigerians to borrow from banks at low interest rates .

The Federal Government has announced the opening of the second marginal oil field licensing round, promising transparency and accountability in the process. The Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, who declared the bid round open at a news conference in Abuja on Thursday, said it was aimed at deepening the participation of indigenous oil companies in the upstream sector of the oil and gas industry. The five-month-old face-off between the Federal Government and Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, over non-implementation of the 2009 agreement assumed a dramatic dimension yesterday, as the government vowed to sack any lecturer  who fails to return to class within seven days. The government has, therefore, directed all vice-chancellors of federal universities that are currently on strike to immediately re-open for academic and allied activities. The striking lecturers on their part, declared the directive by the Federal Government a joke, saying they will never be intimidated into calling off the strike.
