JONATHAN’S PERFORMANCE: Our verdict – Industrialists, others

Mixed reactions have trailed President Goodluck Jonathan’s assessment of his administration in which he said he has done well. Many operators in the private sector dismissed the pass mark which the President awarded to himself, saying that available field experiences and data do not bear him out completely. Others agreed, however, that there are some level of improvement. But all have agreed that the welfare of Nigerians has not improved as unemployment is rising by the day.

Why Amaechi can’t return –Gov Obi

The crisis rocking the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) deepened yesterday with opposition governors and anti-Amaechi group sticking to their positions 48 hours after a controversial election that split the 36 governors’ camp. Relying on the NGF’s constitution, Anambra State Governor Peter Obi said it does not make room for re-election of a sitting chairman.

Jaji blast, Terrorists used chemical bomb –Military commandant

Barely seven months after the suicide bomb blast that hit St Andrew’s Protestant Catholic Church in Jaji Military Cantonment, Kaduna, another revelation has been made that the bomb was a special device, blended with deadly chemical and pellet. The church, which was in the residential quarters of the cantonment was attacked by a suicide bomber on November 25, last year, killing scores and injuring several others.

Tributes galore as Anambra receives Achebe

Awka, the Anambra State capital, yesterday stood still as the remains of the late literary icon, Prof. Chinua Achebe arrived in his state to a resounding reception by the government and people of the state. Government business was also virtually grounded as civil servants obeyed the directive of the government to be present and honour the late icon. They were seen at the venue signing attendance register to confirm their presence and avert any possible reprimand. The body which was carried in a brown casket accompanied by his widow, Prof. Christy Achebe and four children arrived the Amansea border by 12:35pm where it was received by the state Governor, Peter Obi and the senator representing his Senatorial zone, Anambra Central, Dr. Chris Ngige, with other dignitaries and community leaders.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt-General Azubuike Ihejirika, yesterday revealed that some soldiers have been caught relating with the Boko Haram and divulging vital operational secrets of the Army to the Islamist sect. Ihejirika gave the revelation in Abuja at a seminar on “Personnel Management and Development,” organised by the Army Transformation and Innovation Centre.

Soldiers capture 120 terrorists

Defence Headquarters (DHQ) yesterday, said that troops have again captured 120 Boko Haram insurgents in Maiduguri, Borno State, while burying one of their commanders killed during an offensive by the Special Forces.

Army on alert at Nigerian-Benin borders

General Officer Commanding, 2 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Ahmad Jibrin, has said that the Army is on a red alert, to ward off any possible Boko Haram infiltration through the nation’s borders with Benin Republic. The Army boss, who spoke yesterday while receiving a 17-member team from the Indian National Defence College, at the 2 Division’s headquarters at Odogbo Barracks, Ibadan,  said his division did not maintain heavy military presence along the borders of Benin because the two countries had enjoyed a long history of cordial relationship and thus did not envisage any external aggression from its neighbours.

Four confirmed dead in building collapse in Umuahia

FOUR persons have been confirmed dead after a building under construction collapsed in Agbama Housing Estate, Umuahia, Abia state capital.Four other persons sustained various degrees of injury and are now receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia. The identity of the victims was not ascertained as at press time. The incident occurred Wednesday night at about 8 o’clock.

Soul singer Bez and Bolatito Ladoja set to wed in June

A lternative soul singer, Bez Idakula, and his fiancee,  Bolatito Ladoja are getting married next month. Their traditional wedding will hold early June in Lagos, while their white wedding will hold later in the year  in Italy . Another destination wedding. Sweet!!! Bez and Bolatito got engaged May 1st after dating for a few years. Bola is a banker with  FCMB  and also the daughter of  e x-governor of Oyo state, Rasheed Ladoja.

Akpabio backs Jonathan

Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum and Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Obong Godswill Akpabio has endorsed President Goodluck Jonathan’s declaration of emergency rule in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states, saying it will go a long way to bring back peace to both the trouble states and the country at large.

Two more buildings collapse in Lagos

Fresh facts emerged yesterday on the three-storey  building that collapsed on Tuesday afternoon on 14 Bashiru Street, off Isheri Road, Ojodu Berger, Lagos. Two dead bodies were recovered from the rubble while another two persons were rescued alive. The survivors had been taken to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for medical attention. As at 6:40p.m yesterday, the rescue operation was still ongoing.

Boko Haram kills four Yoruba produce buyers in Borno

Tension mounted in the popular New Bodija market yesterday as the traders protested the killing of four of their colleagues allegedly by Boko Haram insurgents in Maiduguri, Borno State on Sunday. The foursome simply identified as Nihas, Fatai a.k.a Coach, Alaba and Amodu had travelled to the Borno State capital to buy millet products, when they were reportedly attacked and shot dead by gunmen two kilometres to Dikua village, their destination in the outskirts of the Borno State capital.

Militants kill another two in Bayelsa

Less than 72 hours after militants killed eight persons at Lobia community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, militants have again killed two persons at Kuroamagbene, in the same council area. This is coming on the heels of an intelligence report by the Joint Military Task Force, Operation Pulo Shield, which has identified Southern Ijaw in Bayelsa State as the new hub of dreaded devil criminals bent on triggering instability in the state.
