The Greek Catholic Church in Hungary has lost a landmark court case to keep open a primary school in a predominantly Roma neighbourhood. The school in the eastern city of Nyiregyhaza was closed down under desegregation plans in 2007 - but reopened in 2011. The ruling could affect other Church- and state-run schools in Hungary.

The Turkish authorities have freed the sons of two former cabinet ministers pending trial, the latest twist in a major corruption investigation. Baris Guler and Kaan Caglayan, arrested in December, were among dozens of people held in an investigation into bribery relating to public tenders. The inquiry enraged Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who saw it as a "plot" against him. He responded with a purge of top police and judicial officials. An Azeri businessman of Iranian origin, Reza Zarrab, was also released on Friday.

More than 200 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa have broken into Spain’s North African enclave of Melilla by scaling the border fence. It is one of the biggest migrant surges into Melilla in recent years. Many of the migrants suffered cuts scaling the fence. During the incident, migrants threw stones, sticks and bottles at police, officials say. This month there have been similar mass break-ins in Melilla and Ceuta – another Spanish city in North Africa.

Ghana’s health minister has given a hospital in the city of Kumasi 14 days to produce the bodies of five babies that were allegedly stillborn. Seven people were charged with stealing and conspiracy to steal a baby from the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital earlier in February. Suwaiba Mumuni, whose baby is among the five missing, told the BBC she believes her child is still alive. The hospital, the second largest in Ghana, has denied the allegations.

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny has been placed under house arrest and forbidden from using the internet or receiving visitors. The house arrest is for two months, but can be extended. Investigators accused him of violating the terms of a suspended sentence from an earlier case. Navalny, a leading opposition figure and anti-corruption campaigner, has dismissed the charges against him as ridiculous and politically motivated.

International efforts to bail out Cyprus' debt-laden economy have been thrown into doubt after its parliament rejected a key part of the plan. The MtGox bitcoin exchange has filed for bankruptcy protection, reports say. The application was made in Japan by lawyers acting on behalf of the exchange and comes only days after MtGox went offline. On Tuesday, the exchange's boss said he was working hard to find a "solution to our recent issues". Before going offline, technical troubles meant it prevented customers transferring digital cash to other exchanges on 7 February.

The Burmese government has suspended the operations of one of the biggest aid agencies working in violence-hit Rakhine state. Speaking to the BBC, a presidential spokesman alleged that Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) was biased in favour of Rakhine's Muslim Rohingya minority. MSF is one of the biggest providers of healthcare in Rakhine. It provides emergency assistance to tens of thousands of Rohingya people displaced by recent violence. It also administers extensive HIV and anti-malaria programmes.

The House of Representatives Committee on Finance said on Thursday that it was set to take up the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, at a public hearing on the state of the Nigerian economy. A statement by the Clerk to the committee, Mr. Farouk Dawaki, explained that the hearing would be held between March 3 and March 6. It added that the minister would be required to address the 50 questions on the state of the economy, which the committee handed to her in December 2013. One of the questions was on how much revenue the country lost to import waivers between 2011 and 2013.

Two judges, Justice Gladys Olotu of the Abuja Federal High Court and Justice U. A. Inyang of the Federal Capital Territory High Court, have been suspended for gross misconduct after the National Judicial Council forwarded a recommendation for their dismissal to President Goodluck Jonathan. The President is expected to approve the sacking of the two judicial officers. A statement from the Acting Director of Information in the NJC, Soji Oye, explained that the council, headed by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Aloma Mukhtar, took the decision at a meeting on Wednesday, where the two judicial officers were suspended, pending the approval of their dismissal by the President.

THE Rivers State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has accused the state Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, of masterminding the kidnap of the Chairman of the party in Port Harcourt Local Government Area, Mr. Ikechi Chinda, a former member of the House of Representatives, Mr. Chinyere Igwe and Mr. Allwell Ihunda. The state Chairman of the PDP, Mr. Felix Obuah, said the three members of the party were abducted by unidentified gunmen at about 8pm on Wednesday around Eagle Island axis of Port Harcourt.

On Wednesday, the bloodletting extended to Adamawa State where Boko Haram terrorists, armed with rocket-propelled grenades nearly sacked four communities. An official death toll in the attacks was not available as of 9.40pm on Thursday. But the British Broadcasting Corporation Hausa Service put it at 37 while the Agence France Presse reported 33. Banks, shops, part of a local government secretariat and houses were reported to have been looted and burnt during the six-hour simultenous raids on the three communities – Michika, Gulak , Shuwa and Krichinga – by the militants.

The Nigeria Football Federation on Thursday in Abuja unveiled new sets of jerseys for the Super Eagles, ahead of the Brazil 2014 FIFA World Cup. The federation defended the new colours insisting it had nothing to do with the colours of one of their partners Globacom. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the jerseys came in three sets of Green and lemon, white, lemon and green, as well as orange and black, for the goalkeepers. The NFF President, Aminu Maigari, said the football house chose the new colours to strike a balance between the present and future national teams, especially the Super Eagles.

At least 26 people have been killed in bombings around the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, according to officials. Seventeen people were killed in one blast at a second-hand motorbike market in the eastern Sadr City district, they said. The bomb, which also injured 38, appears to have been placed in a motorbike at the market. Also in Sadr City, officials said five were killed and 14 injured when a bomb attached to a minibus exploded,

The University of Ghana has closed all entries into the school with the exception of the Okponglo end, the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation reported Wednesday. This, according to the report, follows the suspension of the collection of tolls by the University. The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Ernest Aryittey, who announced the suspension and subsequent closure of the entries, called on government to redeem its promise of paying for the $2.3 million the University contracted for infrastructural projects.

German broadcaster WDR reports athletes used the noble gas xenon, which academic studies say causes an increase of the hormone erythropoietin (EPO). A jihadist group in Syria has demanded that Christians in the northern city of Raqqa pay a levy in gold and accept curbs on their faith, or face death. The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) said it would give Christian residents "protection" if they agreed to the list of conditions. The announcement came in a statement posted online. Correspondents say ISIS is trying to implement an extreme interpretation of Islamic law in areas it controls. Raqqa, seized by ISIS last year, was the first provincial capital to be completely in the hands of rebels.

Both the Senate President, David Mark; and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, on Wednesday mourned the late Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Adesina Ajayi, who died early Tuesday after a protracted battle with cancer of the urinary bladder. Mark and Tambuwal eulogised the late Ajayi and condoled with the Government and people of the state even as the Ondo State House of Assembly declared a seven-day period to mourn its late Speaker. Mark described Ajayi’s death as a painful loss, not only to the people of Ondo State but to the nation as a whole, particularly the legislature.
