The Federal Government and State Security Service have accused the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mallam Lamido Sanusi, of financing terrorism. Nigeria's army killed some 600 people after a recent attack by Boko Haram militants on a barracks, Amnesty International has said. Quoting eye-witnesses, it said that after the raid in the north-eastern city of Maiduguri, detainees who had escaped were rounded up and killed. The army has not yet commented on the allegations but has denied previous reports of abuses. The conflict has killed some 1,500 people this year, according to Amnesty. Half of those killed were civilians, the organisation said.

A General Motors engineer ignored company standards when approving a design change for faulty ignition switches linked to at least a dozen deaths, documents suggest. The allegation appears to contradict information given in legal proceedings against the US car maker in 2013. GM has recalled almost 2.6 million vehicles because of the defect, which has caused some engines to turn off. The company has been criticised for not recalling vehicles earlier. The recall affects 1.6 million cars made before 2007, and last week GM announced it would also cover more than 800,000 made from 2008-11 , covering a variety of models including the Chevrolet Cobalt and Saturn Ion.

Mr Valls, 51, is set to replace PM Jean-Marc Ayrault, whose office confirmed his resignation on Monday. Malaysian authorities have issued a new version of the last communication between air traffic control and the cockpit of the missing flight MH370. The last words spoken were "Good night Malaysian three seven zero" - and not "all right, good night" as reported. The transport ministry said forensic investigations would determine whether the pilot or co-pilot spoke the words. The plane, carrying 239 people, was travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing when it disappeared on 8 March.

Czech police investigating the death of a Palestinian envoy have said he was most likely killed by "mishandling" an explosive. Ambassador Jamal al-Jamal died in a blast at the Palestinian Embassy in the capital, Prague, on 1 January. Police initially thought that Mr Jamal might have triggered a booby-trapped safe inside the complex. But tests carried out by investigators suggest that he was holding an explosive in his hand when it went off. The ambassador's death is being investigated as a case of negligence.

The ousted mayor of the Ugandan capital, Kampala, has been ordered from his office by a judge just hours after returning to his post. The appeals judge overturned a ruling by the High Court on Friday, which had cleared the way for Erias Lukwago to resume duties. The opposition figure had returned to city hall in a "grand" procession on Monday morning, Ugandan media report. A tribunal had found the mayor guilty of incompetence and abuse of office.

The Ebola outbreak that has killed 78 people in Guinea is "unprecedented", a medical charity has said. An official with Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) said the spread of the disease across the country made it very difficult to control. The West African state is facing a battle to contain the outbreak after cases were reported in towns that are hundreds of kilometres apart. Ebola is spread by close contact and kills between 25% and 90% of victims. "We are facing an epidemic of a magnitude never before seen in terms of the distribution of cases," Mariano Lugli, a co-ordinator in Guinea for the aid group said.

Germany's Foreign Minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, has welcomed a "slight reduction" in the number of Russian troops along Ukraine's border. The Russian defence ministry said one motorised infantry battalion was withdrawing from the Rostov region. After a meeting with his French and Polish counterparts, Mr Steinmeier said it was a "small signal" that the situation was becoming less tense. Thousands of Russian soldiers are still said to be deployed along the border. Earlier, Ukraine condemned a visit to Crimea by Russia's Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and a delegation of government ministers.

AHEAD of the 2015 governorship election in Rivers State, the Peoples Democratic Party has dismissed speculations in some quarters that the Supervising Minister of Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, has resigned his appointment and membership of the Federal Executive Council. The state chapter of the PDP said in a statement issues in Port Harcourt on Monday that Wike was still in charge of the Education Ministry at the federal level. The statement signed by the Special Adviser on Media to the State Chairman of the party, Mr. Jerry Needam, called on party members and the general public to disregard speculations that the minister had resigned his position.

The costs of inaction on climate change will be "catastrophic", according to US Secretary of State John Kerry. Mr Kerry was responding to a major report by the UN which described the impacts of global warming as "severe, pervasive and irreversible". He said dramatic and swift action was required to tackle the threats posed by a rapidly changing climate. Delegates at the ongoing National Conference in Abuja may vote in favour of the removal of immunity clause from the constitution, if the growing consensus of opinion on this issue among members is anything to go by. Proponents of an amendment to Section 308 of the Nigerian Constitution, which deals with immunity for the President and state governors, had begun moves to ensure that the proposal sailed through. We  learnt that the proponents were already discussing with other delegates to ensure they got the required votes to delete the clause from the nation’s constitution.

A Professor of Community Medicine, Modupe Onadeko, has advised women to always go for proper screening for breast cancer, saying self-examination was no longer adequate. Onadeko gave the piece of advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Ibadan on Thursday. She said some women had been getting positive results from self-examination of the breast only for a lump to be discovered after doing mammography screening. She explained that the best way to avoid a delay in detecting breast cancer was by screening through mammography which could be done annually.

Russia's Vladimir Putin has telephoned President Barack Obama to discuss the US proposal for a diplomatic solution to the crisis in Ukraine, the White House says. Mr Obama suggested that Russia put a concrete response in writing, his spokesman said in a statement. Russia's annexation of Crimea has sparked international condemnation. The US president urged Mr Putin to avoid the build-up of forces on the Russian border with Ukraine. The Joint Task Force (JTF) in the Niger Delta on March 28, 2014, Friday, announced the arrest of members of a syndicate specializing in crude oil theft. The members of the group, which included two Britons, have been arrested shortly after offering a bribe to the officials. The suspects, who brought $66,500 (N10.6 million) to the JTF as the first half of the total N20m bribe, were paraded at the JTF Headquarters in Yenagoa on Friday. Egyptian security forces routinely torture detainees as young as 15 years of age, according to testimony given to us. Former detainees - often held for being near a protest - have described being electrocuted, beaten and sexually abused by security personnel. The army-backed interim government has detained some 20,000 people since it came to power last July. A government official "categorically denied" torture had taken place. "There might be some mistakes or transgressions in police stations however they don't reach the level of torture," said Gen Abu Bakr Abdel Karim from the interior ministry .

A grenade attack on a funeral in Bangui, capital of the Central African Republic, kills 20 people, a government minister says. The attack happened at around 23:00 on Thursday (22:00 GMT), Public Security Minister Denis Wangao Kizimale was quoted as saying. Eleven people were injured in the attack, he told AFP news agency. The country has been hit by civil conflict since a rebel group deposed the president in March 2013.

Norway's ex-PM Jens Stoltenberg has been appointed Nato's next Secretary General, replacing Denmark's Anders Fogh Rasmussen He will take over as leader of the 28-nation military alliance in October, when Mr Rasmussen steps down after a Nato summit in Wales. US President Barack Obama has urged Russia to "move back its troops" on Ukraine's border and lower tensions. Russia is believed to have massed a force of several thousand troops close to Ukraine's eastern frontier. A faction of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, under the leadership of the Governor of Plateau State, Mr. Jonah Jang, has condemned the killings in Kaduna, Benue and some North-Eastern states. The governors, who had a closed-door meeting that lasted from Wednesday night to the early morning of Thursday in Abuja, also called on Nigerians to give the ongoing national conference the needed support and encouragement. Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State, who read the communique after the meeting, said that the forum sympathised with the governors and people of the affected states where he said insurgents had carried out their atrocities.

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission have interrogated 10 judges of the Federal High Court for alleged corruption. An operative of the commission, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, said more judges had been invited for interrogation next week. As of the time of filing this story, operatives of the commission were expecting a prominent judicial official for allegedly demanding N10m bribe from a retired officer of the Nigeria Customs Service.

Chief Lekan Alabi, the Chairman of the Publicity Sub-Committee for the Olubadan Centenary Birthday, said this at a news conference on Thursday in Ibadan, Oyo State, News Agency of Nigeria reports. He said the recipients were Senate President David Mark, Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka and America-based Historian, Prof. Toyin Falola.
