American Transgender actress, Laverne Cox, of Netflix's hit  Orange Is the New Black   becomes the first transgender woman to grace the cover of Time magazine for a story about 'The Transgender Tipping Point. Time revealed the mag cover today.

               Actress Lupita Nyong'o has optained rights for the film version of Americanah. Chimamanda Adichie apparently confirmed it today during a Stylist magazine book session in London.

     The newlyweds were spotted leaving a cinema after watching a movie during their honeymoon in Ireland yesterday. They were both dressed in black and tried to go unnoticed but other movie-goers noticed them with one later tweeting  "Kim and Kanye are having the weirdest honeymoon like they went to the cinema in Portlaoise??' Where's the honeymoon bliss though? The couple are planning to have a short honeymoon though as they both due to attend a friend's wedding in LA this weekend.

               The Minister of Youth Development, Mr. Boni Haruna today May 29th revealed plans by President Jonathan to grant amnesty to members of Boko Haram once they lay down their arms and embrace peace. The Minister revealed this while speaking this morning at the national Democracy Day programme tagged A day with young leaders of Nigeria. "President Goodluck Jonathan has also declared amnesty for members of the Boko Haram sect. Series of integration programmes have been lined up for the members of the sect who would surrender their arms and embrace peace.                              Members of the Ondo State House of Assembly this morning May 27th elected Ms Jumoke Akindele  representing Okitipupa constituency II as the new speaker of the State Assembly. Pulling 13 votes, Ms Akindele who is a trained lawyer emerged speaker after the election. She was Chairman, House Committee on Education in the house before her recent election.  The former speaker, Mr Samuel Adeshina Ajayi lost his battle to cancer in Feb 25th 2014 making the seat vacant for new leadership.

                             A German newspaper -  Bild  today published the bare butt of the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, which will no doubt attract the wrath of the royal family.                                The nursery school teacher, Mr. Olayinka Oluwadare Folarin, who allegedly defiled three under‑aged pupils in a toilet, yesterday, said it was one of the girls that made advances at him. Folarin, aged 38, who claimed his illicit romance with the minors was a demonic attack which had been affecting him for a long time, said: “One of them made advances at me. You know how children play with you in a funny way. This thing is beyond me.”

The Igbo community in Jos has confirmed that 36 of its kinsmen and women were killed and 42 others injured in last Tuesday’s twin bomb blast at the terminus area of Jos metropolis in Plateau State. The Eze Igbo II of Jos, Prof. Joseph Obilom and the Igbo Executive Council in Jos made this known in Jos, yesterday.

BUJA— FRANCE, yesterday, declared that the Boko Haram sect will be treated like Al-Qaeda, just as the sect’s members, again, killed 29 people in a Borno border village. Also, yesteday, President Goodluck Jonathan declared that although the Chibok school girls have not been rescued 39 days after their abduction, he was not slow in the rescue operation as he was in constant touch with his security chiefs on a daily basis. French Ambassador to Nigeria, Jacques Champagne de Labriolle, who made the declaration in Abuja said his country would not hesitate to offer intelligence support, pointing out that collective effort was needed to tackle insurgency.

ABUJA – Thirty days after the abduction of the over 200 Chibok girls in Borno State, President Goodluck Jonathan, Thursday, condemned in strong terms the speculation of some Nigerians that he is slow in bringing back the abducted girls. He stated this while addressing the protesters from #Bring Back Our Girls campaign group in Abuja. He said he is not slow in acting because he is on constant discussions with security chiefs almost daily and is in constant consultations with regional and global partners on the terrorist threats.

JOS—The relative peace enjoyed by residents of Jos, Plateau State capital for some time was shattered, yesterday, as two bomb explosions ripped through Terminus Market in the city, killing no fewer than 118 persons and injuring several others . The Police, however, said that 46 were killed while 45 others were injured. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), described the casualty rate of the blasts as catastrophic just as President Goodluck Jonathan, Governor Jonah Jang and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal condemned it.

THE Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta has claimed responsibility for the explosion around the Port Harcourt Refinery Jetty on Sunday. MEND, in a statement released on Monday by its spokesperson, Jomo Gbomo, said the attack on the pipelines was part of its ongoing operation codenamed ‘Hurricane Exodus’. Dismissing claims that oil thieves and pipeline vandals were responsible for the explosion, the militant group said that the facility was infiltrated by some of its fighters with the aide of agents within the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation.

Nearly 60 countries led by Switzerland have expressed support for a French proposal to produce Syria before the International Criminal Court (ICC). They are calling on the ICC to investigate possible crimes against humanity and war crimes. Swiss ambassador to the UN Paul Seger issued an appeal on behalf of the group to the Security Council to adopt a draft resolution over the issue. However such a resolution is likely to be opposed by China and Russia.

Forced labour generates illegal profits of at least $150bn (£90bn; 110bn euros) a year, a study by the International Labour Organization (ILO) says. The profits are far higher than previous estimates and the ILO wants governments to tackle the problem. Some 21 million people worldwide are in forced labour, it says, with migrant workers most vulnerable. Over half of all forced labourers work in Asia, with 18% in Africa and almost 10% in Latin America.

The Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, has said there is no possibility that the abducted Chibok schoolgirls are still within the Sambisa Forest. He said there were possibilities that the girls had been split into groups and taken into different parts of the country. The minister said this on Monday just as the Northern Elders’ Forum urged the Federal Government to negotiate with Boko Haram for the release of the girls, abducted from the Government Girls’ Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, since April 14.

President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday met behind closed-doors with service chiefs over Sunday’s bomb blast in Kano, Kano State. His Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, who disclosed this on his Twitter handle, said Jonathan directed the security chiefs to thoroughly probe the incident that led to the death of some people and destruction of property in Sabon Gari area of the city. The meeting was held inside the Presidential Villa, Abuja, shortly after the President’s arrival from Lagos in the early hours of the day.

The United States Government has said that the Islamic sect, Boko Haram, is not a branch of the global terrorist organisation, al-Qaeda. President Goodluck Jonathan had during the France security summit on the menace of the insurgent group on Saturday, described the Boko Haram sect, as the “al Qaeda of West Africa.” But the US said though terrorists groups around the world were known to have links, it cautioned that the sect should be treated as its “own terrorist group.”

A Ugandan court has sentenced a nurse to three years in prison for negligence over the potential infection of a two-year-old boy with HIV. Rosemary Namubiru, who is HIV-positive, was criminally negligent by using an intravenous needle, that she had accidentally pricked her finger with, on the child, the court ruled. The child was not infected and HIV/Aids activists condemned the trial. The case was keenly watched and some papers dubbed her the “killer nurse”. The boy’s father, Daniel Mushabe, welcomed the ruling, saying he hoped the case would spur President Yoweri Museveni to sign into law a bill which criminalises the transmission of HIV.
