The incident occurred in West Garfield Boulevard, Chicago around 4:30 p.m on Monday when Endia Martin, who was walking home from school was approached by the other girl who pulled out a gun and opened fire. Bob Hoskins dies of pneumonia aged 71

Actor Bob Hoskins, who was best known for roles in The Long Good Friday and Who Framed Roger Rabbit, has died of pneumonia at the age of 71. His agent said he died on Tuesday in hospital, surrounded by family. The star was nominated for a best actor Oscar in 1987 for crime drama Mona Lisa, in which he starred opposite Sir Michael Caine and Robbie Coltrane. He announced he was retiring from acting in 2012 after being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.

Antibiotic resistance now 'global threat', WHO warns

Resistance to antibiotics poses a "major global threat" to public health, says a new report by the World Health Organization (WHO). It analysed data from 114 countries and said resistance was happening now "in every region of the world". It described a "post-antibiotic era", where people die from simple infections that have been treatable for decades. There were likely to be "devastating" implications unless "significant" action was taken urgently, it added.

Knutsford University defrauded $80,000 by two Nigerian students

Two Nigerian students of Knutsford University College in Accra have been arraigned before an Accra Circuit Court for stealing an amount of $80,000 belonging to the school. The two level 300 stu­dents, Femi Job and Gaius Biboye, have been charged with four counts of stealing, falsification of accounts and forging of documents. They were alleged to have forged certain docu­ments of the Bank of Africa by interpolating certain fig­ures and succeeded in mak­ing away with the cash belonging to the school.

UK calls for 'urgent' OPCW Syria chlorine investigation

The UK has called on the global chemical weapons watchdog to carry out "with urgency" its investigation into the alleged use of chlorine in Syria. The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) said on Tuesday that a mission would depart "soon". However, UK Foreign Secretary William Hague said: "Time is of the essence in establishing the full facts." Claims by both sides that chlorine gas had been used on several occasions this month were "sickening", he added.

Fuji House of Commotion producer Amaka Igwe is dead

      Popular film producer, writer and director, Amaka Igwe is dead. She reportedly died of an asthma attack last night. Reputed for her professional and brilliant concepts, Amaka produced breathtaking sitcoms like Checkmate and Fuji House of Commotion. She is one of the foremost movie directors in Nigeria today and one of the few contemporary film makers who have had their films on celluloid. Amaka’s celluloid film is A Barber’s Wisdom – a film which was part of M-Net’s new direction on film project with Nigerian producers. Her films have drawn international recognition to the home video industry. She is producer of the award winning movie Forever and founder of Amaka Igwe Studios and Top FM Radio. Amaka hails from Obinagu, Enugu, Nigeria is survived by her husband and children.

Ukraine crisis: Kharkiv mayor Hennadiy Kernes shot

The mayor of the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv has been shot and critically wounded amid continuing unrest in the region. The mayor's office said Hennadiy Kernes was shot in the back by unknown gunmen, reportedly while he was out jogging. It added that he was undergoing emergency surgery in hospital and "fighting for his life". Mr Kernes used to be a supporter of the former pro-Moscow President Viktor Yanukovych. More recently he said he no longer backed the ousted president but supported a united Ukraine. Mr Kernes has been described as a "mini-oligarch" - a successful businessman wealthy enough to launch a career in politics.

2015: Groups want Balewa’s son to challenge Jonathan

Ahead of the 2015 general elections, a group of about 68 organisations, under the aegis of Nigerians for Change, on Saturday in Abuja called on Dr. Abduljhalil Tafawa Balewa, son of the late nationalist and Nigeria’s first Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, to challenge President Goodluck Jonathan for the Presidency. The groups have indeed given Balewa a 21-day ultimatum within which he should declare for the Presidency, failing which they threatened “to organise a one million man march to compel him to do so.”

Obama due to begin state visit to Philippines

US President Barack Obama is due to arrive in the Philippines on Monday on the fourth and final leg of a tour of South East Asia. During his visit, Mr Obama will hold talks with President Benigno Aquino and attend a state dinner. A new defence agreement between the US and the Philippines is due to be signed shortly before Mr Obama's arrival. However, the presence of foreign troops is a sensitive issue in the Philippines, a former US colony. The Enhanced Defence Co-operation Agreement will give US forces temporary access to some military camps and allow them to station fighter jets and ships.

The Osun State Police Command has warned residents of the state against carrying out jungle justice following the burning to death of three suspected kidnappers in Osogbo on Friday. The Police Public Relations Officer in the command, Mrs. Folasade Odoro, said this in an interview with our correspondent. Three suspected kidnappers were set ablaze on Friday in different areas in Osogbo, the state capital. Odoro said that a suspected kidnapper caught and beaten to a pulp at Alekuwodo area on Thursday eventually died while receiving treatment.

Uncertainty surrounds the investigation by the House of Representatives into the alleged N10bn the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, spent to charter a private jet, Challenger 850, for her trips in the last two years. The Public Accounts Committee of the House, which is investigating the expenditure, had two weeks ago, directed Alison-Madueke to make written submissions on the allegation before April 28 (today). The committee, which is chaired by an All Progressives Congress lawmaker from Lagos State, Mr. Solomon Olamilekan, had also fixed Monday (today) as the start of a public hearing on the investigation.

B’Haram: Army to begin mass recruitment in May

The Federal Government has given the armed forces and other security agencies the nod to embark on mass recruitment. We gathered in Abuja on Sunday that the directive was to give fillip to the war against terrorism in the country. It was also learnt that those who attended the expanded National Security Council meeting in Abuja on Thursday emphasised the need for the recruitment. A highly placed military source said that President Goodluck Jonathan issued the directive for more recruitment into the army in March after the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Kenneth Minimah, had briefed him about the operations of the army.

Residents of Olufowobi Street, Ketu, Lagos, were thrown into confusion after an eight-year-old girl, Amarachi Abakwam, was found tied up and brutalised under the bed of a policeman attached to Police Mobile Force 22. We learnt that the policeman, Augustine Gbuchenge, with Force number 400823, lived in the same compound with Amarachi’s family. The father of the victim, Patrick, told that on the fateful day he had been looking everywhere for his daughter until they discovered her under Gbuchenge’s bed.

Former Barcelona Coach Tito Vilanova Passes Away Aged 45

Former Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova who was hospitalized for an emergency surgery on Thursday died today, April 25, the age of 45 after a prolonged battle against cancer. He was diagnosed with cancer of the salivary gland more than two years ago. Due to his health condition he was forced to step down as Barcelona boss at the end of the season, last July. Football Club Barcelona confirmed his death on Twitter saying: "FC Barcelona is in immense mourning. Tito Vilanova has died at the age of 45. May he rest in peace."

South Korea ferry: Divers find 48 bodies in single room

Divers searching a sunken passenger ferry off South Korea found 48 bodies in a single room on the vessel meant to accommodate 38 people, officials say. The group was crammed into a dormitory and all were wearing lifejackets, a South Korean Navy officer said. Some 183 bodies have been recovered from the Sewol, but scores of people are missing, presumed drowned. The head of the operation to retrieve bodies said on Friday he had "no idea" how long the ship search would take.

Russia extends opposition leader Navalny's house arrest

A Moscow court has extended the house arrest of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny by another six months for violating its conditions. His supporters had feared he might be jailed because he was accused of using social media sites despite a ban. He and his brother Oleg are currently on trial, accused of defrauding firms of 31m roubles ($866,000; £517,000). It is the latest in a series of criminal cases against Navalny, who says they are politically motivated. Navalny is an anti-corruption crusader and one of the chief critics of President Vladimir Putin.
