Kogi advocates use of local languages in schools
The state Deputy Gov., Mr Yomi Awoniyi, made the call at the launch of a book titled, ‘Okun-Yoruba’ held in Kabba.
He said the gesture would allow for easier comprehension of the subjects and save the local languages from extinction.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the book, written by Mr Joseph Samuel, is a a collection of proverbs, idioms and other aspects of the Kabba people.
According to him, the difficulty faced by teachers and students in teaching and comprehending English language will be addressed if emphasis is placed on using indigenous language for teaching.
Awoniyi described the old Kabba province as the bedrock of education in the North but regretted that the area was also affected by the dwindling fortunes of education in the country.
The deputy governor reiterated the commitment of the state government to reposition the education sector and called for the support of all stakeholders.
“Gov. Wada Idris has declared zero tolerance in the education sector and i want to urge all stakeholders to support the vision of the government.
“If we are all determined to join hands with the government, the state would soon regain its lost glory in the education sector”, he said.
Awoniyi commended the author for his “painstaking efforts”, saying the book was coming at a time when the Okun language was becoming extinct.
Earlier in his remarks, the author said he was motivated to write the book to educate the people, especially those not conversant with Okun language.
Joseph said it was his contribution to the revival of the language to save it from extinction.
